NDP asks competition watchdog to probe potential rent-fixing by corporate landlords

Writer: Carla LouisseCarla Louisse

The NDP has called on Canada’s Competition Bureau to investigate potential rent-fixing by large corporate landlords. The party is concerned that these companies may be collaborating to artificially inflate rental prices, putting further financial strain on tenants across the country. This request comes amid growing worries about housing affordability, as many Canadians struggle with high rent costs.

NDP housing critic Jenny Kwan highlighted that corporate landlords control a significant portion of the rental market, making it easier for them to influence prices. By working together, these companies could manipulate rents to maximize profits, leaving renters with few affordable options. The NDP believes that this practice could be contributing to Canada’s housing crisis and wants the government to intervene.

Corporate landlords have defended their actions, stating that rising operational costs are driving the need for higher rents. However, the NDP argues that the lack of competition and oversight in the rental market allows these companies to exploit renters. They are pushing for a thorough investigation to determine if rent-fixing is occurring and to hold landlords accountable.

The Competition Bureau has not yet confirmed if it will launch an investigation, but the NDP’s request highlights the growing pressure to address housing affordability in Canada. Many renters are hoping that this inquiry could lead to fairer rental prices and more regulation of corporate landlords in the future.
